The target is a ~250 kDa multi-pass membrane protein that localizes to the rim region of rod and cone outer segment disc membranes, where it functions as an importer flipping N-retinylidene-phosphatidylethanolamine from the disc lumen to the cytoplasmic leaflet, supporting clearance of all-trans retinal generated during the visual cycle.

Reactivity is reported against human, mouse, and rat samples, enabling comparison of patient retinal tissue with mammalian disease models. Researchers commonly apply this reagent to characterize loss-of-function ABCA4 variants associated with autosomal recessive Stargardt macular dystrophy, cone-rod dystrophy, retinitis pigmentosa, and age-related macular degeneration risk, including Abca4 knockout and knock-in mouse studies, iPSC-derived retinal organoids, and post-mortem human retinal lysates probed at the expected ~250 kDa band.
