Description

A cell-permeable derivative of α-hydroxyglutarate (2-HG) supplied by STEMCELL Technologies, this small molecule is used to investigate α-ketoglutarate (αKG)-dependent dioxygenase inhibition and the oxidative mitochondrial processes associated with IDH mutations in cancer. The compound is the (2R)-configured octyl ester of α-hydroxyglutarate, also referred to as (2R)-Octyl-2-HG, with the chemical name 2R-hydroxy-pentanedioic acid, 1-octyl ester (CAS 1391194-67-4) and molecular formula C13H24O5 (molecular weight 260.3 g/mol). It is reported to inhibit α-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases by competing with α-ketoglutarate for enzyme binding, a property relevant to studies of 2-HG accumulation arising from isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) and IDH2 mutations.

The product is supplied as a crystalline solid with a reported purity of ≥ 95%. According to the manufacturer's product information sheet, it is stable for 12 months from the date of receipt when stored at -20 °C, protected from prolonged exposure to light and stored with a desiccant for long-term use. Reported solubility values are ≤ 3.8 mM in PBS (pH 7.2), ≤ 35 mM in DMSO, and ≤ 75 mM in absolute ethanol. The safety data sheet classifies the substance as not hazardous according to the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) and the 2012 OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200), with no specific hazard statements required.
