Description

A glycopeptide-derived antibiotic supplied by STEMCELL Technologies, isolated from the bacterium Streptomyces verticillus. The compound is provided as the sulfate salt (also known by the alternative name Blenoxane) and appears as a crystalline solid. It is identified by CAS Number 9041-93-4, with a molecular formula of C55H84N17O21S3 • XHSO4 and a molecular weight of 1415.6 g/mol. Reported purity is ≥ 95%.

Bleomycin creates DNA strand scission and is described as exhibiting antitumor activity against squamous cell carcinomas and malignant lymphomas. Published applications note that it induces single- and double-strand DNA breaks in tumor cells, and is used in disease modeling to induce lung fibrosis in mice. The product is also reported to induce lung injury leading to acute inflammatory response and pulmonary fibrosis.

The product is stable at -20 °C as supplied, should be protected from prolonged exposure to light, and is stable for 12 months from date of receipt. Reported solubility is ≤ 7.0 mM in PBS (pH 7.2) and ≤ 9.1 mM in DMSO. Under hazard identification it is classified as Germ cell mutagenicity Category 1B, Carcinogenicity Category 2, and Reproductive toxicity Category 2 (IARC Group 2B), with hazard statements that it may cause genetic defects and is suspected of causing cancer and of damaging fertility or the unborn child. It is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents and is intended for research use only.
