Engineered for high-throughput nucleic acid purification workflows, the QIAGEN Type C magnetic rack uses an array of 24 NdFeB (neodymium) rods to pull silica-coated or carboxylate beads to one side of each well in a standard round-well block within seconds. The array-driven design positions each rod between four adjacent wells, immobilizing beads in place while supernatant is removed by aspiration or pipetting for downstream applications such as genomic DNA isolation, viral RNA extraction, PCR cleanup, and sequencing library preparation.
The rack accepts a full block at once, supporting parallel processing of up to 96 samples without individual tube handling. It pairs with single-use consumables like round-well blocks and flat-bottom microplates and is compatible with automated platforms such as the BioRobot 8000 workstation. Typical operating steps include a 1 min bead-capture pause on the magnet, washes performed at approximately 1000 rpm with shaking, and elution in a final volume of 15-25 µl from a bacterial-cell culture starting sample volume of 1.25 ml. DNA binding capacity reaches up to 3.0 µg per 20 µl aliquot of MagAttract Suspension.
Construction uses a corrosion-resistant housing that maintains magnetic strength under room temperature storage; no refrigeration or special handling is required. The unit supports research use only applications spanning protein purification, cell-culture-derived sample processing, and in vitro workflows that depend on clean bead-mediated separation.
