Human Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is a metalloenzyme that catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide anion radicals into molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, providing a primary line of cellular antioxidant defense against reactive oxygen species. This active enzyme preparation from Antibodies.com is supplied as a 100 µg lyophilized powder, unconjugated and free of carrier protein, allowing direct reconstitution into aqueous assay buffers for enzymatic activity work.

SOD exists in three human isoforms: cytosolic Cu/Zn SOD (SOD1), mitochondrial Mn SOD (SOD2), and extracellular Cu/Zn SOD (SOD3), each with distinct subcellular localization and metal cofactor dependence. Active recombinant human SOD is widely used in oxidative stress research, including studies of neurodegeneration, ischemia-reperfusion injury, inflammatory cytokine signaling, radiation-induced damage, and age-related cellular decline. Common downstream applications include cytochrome c reduction activity assays, native PAGE zymography staining, superoxide scavenging kinetics, and use as a positive control in Western blot analyses probing antioxidant responses.

For handling, store the lyophilized enzyme at -20 degrees C in a desiccated environment and protect from light. Reconstitute gently in buffer shortly before use, and avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles to preserve catalytic activity. Intended for research use only.
