The Epstein-Barr Virus nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA-1) is a DNA-binding protein constitutively expressed in every EBV-infected cell regardless of latency state, where it tethers the viral episome to host chromosomes and supports genome replication in dividing B lymphocytes. This recombinant EBNA-1 antigen from Antibodies.com is supplied as 100 µg of purified protein expressed in a heterologous host, providing batch-to-batch reproducibility that is difficult to achieve with viral lysate preparations.

As a coating reagent in ELISA workflows, the antigen captures IgG antibodies that develop against EBNA-1 weeks to months after primary infection, making it a long-term serological marker for confirming past EBV exposure and for distinguishing past infection from acute illness when interpreted alongside VCA IgM results. Researchers studying EBV-driven malignancies such as Burkitt lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma also use recombinant EBNA-1 in immunoblotting, in-house immunoassay development, and as a positive control antigen. The preparation is intended for research use only and should be handled according to standard laboratory practices for recombinant viral proteins.
