The Antibodies.com Human P Selectin ELISA Kit measures P Selectin (CD62P, SELP, GMP-140), a 140 kDa type-I transmembrane adhesion glycoprotein expressed on activated vascular endothelium and platelet surfaces. P Selectin is stored inside Weibel-Palade bodies of endothelial cells and alpha-granules of platelets, and is rapidly translocated to the plasma membrane within minutes after stimulation by thrombin, histamine, or inflammatory cytokines. Once exposed, the lectin domain binds PSGL-1 on circulating leukocytes, tethering them to the vessel wall and initiating the adhesion cascade that precedes leukocyte extravasation. Investigators use soluble P Selectin (sP-selectin) concentrations as a circulating biomarker for platelet activation, endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis, deep vein thrombosis, sickle cell vaso-occlusion, sepsis, and pre-eclampsia research.
