The assay uses a pre-coated microplate with an antibody specific for ELOVL1/SSC1, with detection via a biotinylated anti-ELOVL1/SSC1 antibody and an HRP-avidin conjugate. The enzymatic reaction produces a blue-coloured product that changes to yellow after addition of acidic stop solution, with absorbance read at 450 nm in a microplate reader.

The kit has a sensitivity of <0.056 ng/ml and an assay range of 0.156-10 ng/ml. The total assay time is 4 hours 30 minutes.
